THE WORK
Services and Process
Integrated Strategic Editing is tailored to the communication problem rather than confined to a predetermined type of intervention. Depending on what the material needs, we can evaluate and advise, work directly with existing content, or develop new communication from the underlying information and objectives.
What We Work With
Integrated Strategic Editing is particularly suited to communications whose effectiveness depends not only on how well they are written, but on what they contain, how that information is organised and contextualised, whom they need to reach and what they need to accomplish.
Business and Organisational Communication
Website copy, About pages, service pages, company profiles, internal and stakeholder communications, newsletters, email communications, executive summaries, presentations, case studies, company and speaker bios, and other organisational content.
SOPs and Professional Documentation
Standard operating procedures, work instructions, process and procedural documentation, guidance documents, policies, templates, forms, quality-assurance audit reports, and other materials that form part of a wider operational or information system.
Research and Knowledge Communication
Research manuscripts, research summaries, lay summaries, policy briefs, educational content, knowledge-base articles, research-to-public communication and other materials designed to communicate specialist knowledge to academic, professional or wider audiences.
Strictly website content
Career and Education Applications
Personal statements, statements of purpose, motivation letters, cover letters, CV and profile summaries, scholarship applications, fellowship applications, professional bios, LinkedIn profiles and other materials supporting academic or professional progression.
Proposals, Reports and Thought Leadership
Business and project proposals, pitch documents, audit reports, other professional reports, white papers, thought-leadership articles, award applications and other materials that need to communicate expertise, evidence, recommendations or a persuasive case to a defined audience.
Mission-Led and Social Impact Communication
Grant applications, funding proposals, cases for support, donor communications, fundraising appeals and campaigns, impact stories, impact reports, advocacy materials, stakeholder communications and other materials through which mission-led organisations communicate their purpose, work, outcomes and case for support.
Services
Strategic Review
A Strategic Review provides an expert assessment of an existing communication without undertaking the full revision itself.
We examine the material in relation to its purpose, audience, context and intended outcome, identifying problems that may affect its effectiveness and opportunities to strengthen it. Depending on the project, this may include gaps in content or context, unclear or unsupported reasoning, structural problems, audience misalignment, unarticulated impact, inconsistencies with related materials, or opportunities to improve accessibility and discoverability.
The result is a strategic assessment with prioritised recommendations for what should be addressed and why.
Strategic Editing
Strategic Editing combines diagnosis with direct intervention.
We evaluate the existing material and make the changes necessary to strengthen its effectiveness. The work may involve content development, restructuring, clarification of reasoning, language editing, information architecture, alignment with related materials, or communication, SEO and persuasion strategies where appropriate.
Because the intervention is determined by the communication problem, Strategic Editing can extend beyond improving what is already on the page. Where necessary, we identify missing information or context and work with the client to ensure that the material contains what it needs to fulfil its purpose.
Strategic Writing
Strategic Writing develops communication from its underlying purpose, information and requirements rather than from an existing draft.
We work from the available source material and project context to determine what the communication needs to contain, how it should be structured, what should be emphasised and how it should be expressed for its intended audience and outcome.
Where the necessary substance has not yet been fully articulated, the process can also involve identifying what additional information is required before the communication is developed.
Discuss a Project
Our Process
Across these services, we use a consistent five-stage process:
Define Needs and Scope → Diagnose Problems → Develop Solutions → Validate Outcomes → Evaluate Impact
01 / DEFINE
Define Needs and Scope
We establish what the communication needs to achieve, for whom and within what context, and determine the appropriate scope of the project.
Define establishes the intended outcome and project requirements.
02 / DIAGNOSE
Diagnose Problems
We examine what currently stands between the communication and its intended outcome. The diagnosis determines which problems need to be addressed and which forms of intervention are appropriate.
Diagnose identifies what prevents the communication from achieving that outcome.
03 / DEVELOP
Develop Solutions
We make the necessary intervention, drawing on the analytical, strategic and editorial capabilities relevant to the project.
Depending on the findings, this may mean revising existing material, developing or reorganising content, resolving gaps, strengthening connections, incorporating additional information or creating new communication.
Develop turns the diagnosis into a solution.
04 / VALIDATE
Validate Outcomes
We assess the resulting communication against the needs and criteria established at the beginning of the project.
The objective is not simply to confirm that changes have been made, but to determine whether those changes serve the intended purpose, audience and outcome.
Validate checks whether the intervention works as intended.
05 / EVALUATE
Evaluate Impact
Where appropriate, evaluation continues beyond delivery.
We invite feedback immediately after completion and, for projects whose effectiveness can be assessed after use or implementation, may follow up at an appropriate later stage. This allows us to understand how the communication performed in practice, identify any further needs and continuously strengthen our approach.
Evaluate asks what happened when the communication entered the real world.
A Framework, Not a Formula
The process follows a consistent strategic framework, but its application is adapted and expanded according to the purpose, complexity and communication environment of each project.
Not every project requires the same depth of investigation or the same forms of intervention. A focused piece of communication may require a relatively contained analysis, while a more complex project may depend on information distributed across multiple materials, contributors, processes or systems.
Where necessary, our work therefore extends beyond the document itself. This may include reviewing related materials, gathering additional information, consulting key contributors or stakeholders, and examining the wider context in which the communication is created and used.
